Today, wanting badly to buy some curry powder to cook with but not knowing the name for it, I spent several minutes explaining to the man at the spice shop in my local souq (market) that I was looking for a spicy yellow thing that's used in Indian cooking. I smiled, I gestured, I pantomimed eating spicy food. After giving me some puzzled, what-is-this-American-trying-to-say looks, his face brightened. "Ayza kuri?" he asked.
In Egypt, the word for curry is...kuri.
